News from the World of Research

Karst aquifers currently contribute around 25% of the world’s drinking water. Yet, these systems have not been studied adequately at the microbial functional level. A new paper on cave microbiology is addressing this gap, integrating functional and taxonomic approaches to understand the potential of microbial communities.

The RESTORE4Cs series of multi-lingual Policy Briefs continues with issue n.10. The document presents the Spatial Decision-Support Toolbox, that will help decision makers identify areas where restoration is most needed, and will support the development of replicable and spatially explicit methods for resource allocation.

EGU 2026 is approaching! Join LifeWatch ERIC in Vienna with two collaborative sessions, one dedicated to Essential Variables and inspired by the work in ENVRI-Hub NEXT, and the other one on Virtual Research Environments in Earth Science.

The story of AlgaeBase Taxon Match is one of long-lasting collaboration between WoRMS, the World Register of Marine Species, and AlgaeBase, the database of information on terrestrial, marine, and freshwater algae and seagrasses.

Science for All

We are happy to launch Where Waters Breathe, on the LifeWatching Science Channel. The 6-episode documentary series takes us on a restoration journey through RESTORE4C's six case pilots, featuring stunning landscapes and testimonials from the people on the frontline of biodiversity conservation.
